Is Windows 8 worth getting?

Windows 8 is the latest shiny new thing from Microsoft. It has some souped up stuff over Windows 7 but with that also comes some things that could be seen as a disadvantage. Windows 8 is faster than 7, that much is sure. The brand-spanking new “Hybrid boot” means that you don’t have to wait as long to boot up the system. There is also a sexy new lock screen, this will display things such as notifications and a clock. Remember the clunky Windows Explorer that you had to go through with 7, well now it has had a bit of an overhaul. It is now called “File Explorer” It has some great improvements. A cool new feature called “File History” allows you to make incremental revisions of files to be backed up and if you lose the first copy, can be opened on a secondary storage device. Windows 8 allows better integration with services that are online. A cloud type system has been implemented with this.

Windows 8 brings many new features to your PC (if you wish to buy it), but no doubt the biggest thing that is new and that has been getting a lot of attention is the Windows 8 store. Like the Apple store, you can download apps for PC. The majority of the apps have been optimized not only for PC but for touch screen devices too. This allows you to use the same apps that you would use at home on the go with ease. All sounds good right? Well not everyone is happy with this brand new app store. If you are someone who likes to play video games on their PC Windows 8 might not be the operating system for you. Industry veterans such as Gabe Newell and Notch have said that because Microsoft have control over everything that will get download to your computer they will get rid of competition such as the wildly popular Steam. They and others have said that it will harm the games industry on the PC in a huge way. Gabe Newell has even started developing s Steam application for Linux as a precaution.

A big change that you will see with Windows 8 right from the start (literally) is the brand new desktop page. It has large images and looks like something you would expect to see on a touch screen device. The new theme is called “Windows 8 Style” and it will change how you navigate your PC significantly. People have said that they are all for the change, they think that making something different can only be a good thing. However, many have also said that the theme does not suit a PC well and was clearly designed for tablet devices.

In conclusion, you should buy Windows 8 if you want to make your PC run smoother and faster. Don’t move to Windows 8 if you do not like change. It should also be noted that gamers should be wary about what this new operating system could mean for their future if they choose to upgrade (or downgrade seeing how you look at it). What do you think? Is Windows 8 a waste of time or what everyone needs right now? Give your thoughts in the comment section.
